Best remembered for his 1973 smash "My Maria," singer/songwriter B.W. Stevenson (the "B.W." reportedly stood for "Buckwheat" -- his real first name was Louis) was born October 5, 1949 in Dallas, TX. As a teen he played in a variety of local rock bands before attending college, eventually joining the U.S. Air Force; upon returning from duty Stevenson settled in the Austin area, where he became a frequent attraction on the city's thriving club circuit. Upon signing to RCA he was marketed primarily to country listeners, enjoying little success with either his 1972 self-titled debut or its follow-up Lead Free; the title track of 1973's My Maria, however, became a Top Ten pop favorite, although ironically it missed the country charts altogether. Stevenson never again recaptured the single's success, and after 1974's Calabasas he landed at Warner Bros. to issue We Be Sailin' a year later. "Down to the Station," from 1977's Lost Feeling, was his last chart hit, and after 1980's Lifeline his recording career was over. Sadly, Stevenson died on April 28, 1988 shortly after undergoing heart surgery; he was just 38 years old.

A friend was singing "Peaceful Easy Feeling" today and I thought of B.W...NOBODY made that song sound as good as B.W. did...I also love his "Cactus Jack" and find myself humming it frequently. I think of him often and the days I lived in Austin and he was constantly around playing.

I meet Chuck Stevenson in Dallas after he got out of the Navy. I ran a little club downtown. I thought a lot of him and his music. Another friend started playing with him back when he started going by BuckWheat Stevenson. That person, a lot of county music fans will also know, Mickie Raffel who has been with Willy Nelson for many moons.

I am not reviewing this CD. Instead I am reliving a piece of my life. I have seen B.W. a few times in Dallas in the 70s. At Whiskey River and Six flags over texas. B.W. was a true free spirit. His songs are sad, haunting stories of his life. I am so glad to find this CD. The last I had heard was that his wife would not release the rights to his music. Please if you have never heard B.W Stevenson sing buy this CD. You will never be diaappointed that you did. A ture gem cut down at an early age here in Nashville.

BW Stevenson will forever hold a place in the chroncles in Texas simply know as The Cosmic Cowboy era! A Era when texas rock and country music fused together for the good to help our state progress before it's time when she needed it the most. Made up of space-city cowboys and girls who dressed in a combination of bellbottom jeans, cowboy boots and shirts along with hats that showed character, plenty of lonestar beers and shots of jack black oh and dynimite herb! It was a getdown pary where everyone both young and old rock and country became peaced-off rednecks. And no one can take that away from Texas ever!

The finest of Texas music that you could ever hear. When I listen to B.W. I can picture him traveling from town to town playing his music. Alot of sadness in his voice but what a remarkable talent. His music is haunting and while I would recommend any of his albums but Lead Free is still my 5+ star pick. "On My Own" or "Texas Morning" alone will sell you on this album and man.
